There are many legends about the creation of this dessert. According to one of them, a pastry chef from France came up with a dessert that literally translated as “a thousand words.” In 1912, the Russian Empire celebrated 100 years since the victory over Napoleon's army. A local pastry chef knew the recipe for “a thousand words” and prepared it for Nicholas II, making it in the shape of a triangle. During Soviet times, food shortages forced ordinary people to modernize the recipe and simplify it. The dough has become flaky, and the cream is prepared using butter and condensed milk.
