The croissant is the most popular French pastry, but Austria is considered to be its birthplace. According to legend, the first croissants were created in Vienna in honor of the victory over the Ottoman Empire. That is why they were made in the shape of a crescent - in this way the Viennese bakers ridiculed the main symbol of the enemy state. Croissants became famous after the French Revolution, when they began to be made not from ordinary dough, but from puff pastry. Today, these baked goods can be made from phyllo.
